Black tears
Black rain
Black fears
Black pain
Strange fruit hanging from a tree
A picnic to celebrate the honoree
Resurrected as scarecrows in Madison Tennessee
Lost souls still swimming at bottom of the Tallahatchie River
Ghosts of Mississippi moan and whisper
The names that gained fame
For death and blood stains
Now in mockery but disguised as justice
Reopened murder cases to avoid Black fists
Pacifiers systematically placed
Wake Black Man racism is in your face
But since we can't see past our rims
Don't even notice the tree engraved on our Tims
If it aint bling or on BET
What the hell does it have to do with me...
Everything
Black skin covered in the blood that was shed
In hopes that knowledge would be fed
Yet we regerjutate because the spoon wasn't silver
Or better yet platinum
Enslaving ourselves and surprised by the outcome
Ignoring the voices that blow in the wind
The lost souls still have story to tell
Not just in Jena but many other jail cells
Locked away and innocence removed
Convicted and jailed yet guilt was never proved
We are at war even if you don't shoot back
We are at war even if you aint been shot yet
Trying to be conscious but how easily we forget
Mad, frustrated, easily angered
But how should I feel knowing i'm endangered
Expected to live underwater
As the streets of New Orleans overflowed
It aint sarcasm but your compassion showed
The levees broke
And no one cared
FEMA and the White House just sat and stared
Drowning babies
People were trapped
Right beside Kanye
Nobody gives a damn when you're Black
So to all those souls that lost their way home
Your light burns in us
It's what makes us strong
I see pieces of me when I stare into you
We will survive this holocaust
It's what we do
