Black does not define me, though black is who i am, Colored does not describe me, colored was their blood, sweat, and tears, Slaves do not represent me, but it's what they were, Being African-American is my ancestry, but it's not where i come from, My brown skin makes me stand out, but it's not what sets me apart, Being negro is my heritage, but its not my history, My roots are nappy but that's because rocks were thrown in the way, See it used to be you had to be on the front line, not because of skill, but so you could die first, And it used to be we had to sit in the back and enter through the back doors, And we used to be counted out, see the literacy tests said we couldn't read a ballot, And it used to be all we were good for was cleaning up after someone else, And it used to be-----is in the past and we don't dwell there anymore, See now we've proven our abilities, talents, scratch that, now we've displayed out talent and abilities and talents And because "our" people broadcasted what we can do i refuse to be categorized by color, Because my nature, my religion, my tact, my refuge, my drive, my effort, my skill, my confidence, my courage, my inner beauty goes beyond skin deep
