A poem for Catherine and Joe
And their baby boy Michael
7-21-09 Sekhem
In the midst of Indiana, Gary ghetto poverty
And a world that said your not equal
Holding on to what little they could
They were just regular …everyday people
Mom was ….Catherine having a bunch of kids
And Dad was …Joe doing the best…he did
And I suppose there’s some controversy
Let’s face it …don’t we denigrate women who have a bunch of kids…?
And men who do like Joe…to handle their biz?
But then again…compared to no Mom and/or Dad….
I don’t know…
I mean …she was just a black women
and he a black man striving
No different from me or you
Just working out best they could the daily survivin’
….and they could’ve decided not to let Michael thru
(never mind Janet)
Either could’a said….no! not this child, no more!
(cause with all those kids already you can imagine …at least for a moment….they wanted to)
But together….they didn’t
And right or wrong….
there’s no place on the planet
Their baby boy could hide
And equally…no place….his genius could be denied
No, our families aren’t going to be perfect
Frankly we are all lucky to get what we get
Still…for me….
no show of LIFE more militant
Then the striving black family brilliance
of the babies of Catherine and Joe
standing tall, singing and dancing
Reppin’ Black America
like nobody else’s business!
No question with them ….always a good show…
ABC elementary…none can deny their hustle
In my heart …they're forever
sportin proud
tight afro’s
Their legacy….to me
they live(d) their possibilities
So Black momma’s and daddies
Young or old
hug your babies
In your arms them hold
Have them ladies
….have them….
…Catherine and Joe did ….
And what wonderful gifts they did give
To all their kids, grandkids, and greats to come
And Michael
Your 51 years are ingrained in my history
Applause to the man
Forever feeling the family
Whatever I do, where ever I go
Yes,
~fist in air~
you’ll be there
with me
